World number one Scottie Scheffler assessed the distinct challenges of links golf on Wednesday, ahead of his upcoming tournament on the East Coast and next week's Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

Scheffler noted that recent course rerouting has altered the final stretch of holes, increasing the difficulty.

He also highlighted significant differences in green speeds compared to courses in the United States.

According to a report by Midlothian View, the putting surfaces feature an unusual combination of pace and texture.

Scheffler described the texture as distinct from standard tournament greens, adding that the ball rolls differently across the coastal turf.

“The speed is a little bit slower,” Scheffler said, emphasizing that it remains unique compared to American courses.

When asked about weather preferences for the weekend, the golfer remained indifferent.

“It doesn’t really matter,” he said, though he acknowledged that coastal environmental factors have a significant effect on shots.

Appreciation for Traditional Golf

Scheffler expressed deep appreciation for the traditional style of golf found in Scotland, calling the coastal setup “pure” and “raw.”

He added that the conditions provide an authentic challenge for competitive players.

“This is why golf was invented here,” Scheffler said, noting that touring professionals generally wish for more opportunities to compete under these conditions throughout the season.

Off the course, Scheffler shared that his family is staying along the East Coast, keeping a low profile.

The trip has been relaxing and enjoyable for them before the intense major championship week begins.

Despite being nearby, Scheffler admitted he has not visited a famous local course in North Berwick, saying he “never really quite finds the time.”

Scheffler concluded by thanking the local gallery and expressing his desire to return.
