The New York Knicks have brought back veteran guard Jordan Clarkson on a one-year, $3.9 million deal, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.

The agreement was reached on Thursday, July 9, 2026, as the team continues to manage its salary cap situation.

Cap Space and Roster Moves

Following the signing, the Knicks have approximately $3.3 million in space below the second apron and one open roster spot, per Bobby Marks of ESPN.

Before finalizing Clarkson's contract, New York had $5.7 million in projected second apron space, according to Spotrac.

Team owner James Dolan previously stated the organization does not intend to cross the second apron threshold, limiting their ability to pursue elite free agents like LeBron James.

ESPN reported that James was open to signing a veteran minimum contract with a championship contender, but his agent Rich Paul indicated that a move to New York depended on the Knicks failing to win the 2026 title.

With Jalen Brunson leading the Knicks to the championship, the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Philadelphia 76ers have become frontrunners for James.

New York let center Mitchell Robinson join the Boston Celtics on a three-year deal averaging $15.8 million annually.

The team used $17.5 million in total cap space to add Andre Drummond and re-sign Clarkson, Landry Shamet, Jose Alvarado, and Mohamed Diawara.

If James signs elsewhere, the Knicks may target center Jonas Valančiūnas, who was recently waived by the Denver Nuggets and previously linked to New York by Ian Begley of SNY.
