Manchester City secured the transfer of Northern Ireland international goalkeeper Pierce Charles from Sheffield Wednesday on Friday, July 10, 2026, immediately sending him to Queens Park Rangers on a season-long loan.

The 20-year-old shot-stopper agreed to a five-year contract with the Premier League champions until the summer of 2031, yielding a guaranteed £5 million fee for Sheffield Wednesday that could potentially reach £10 million through bonuses.

Financial Details and Club Record

The financial structure of the deal positions Charles to potentially break a 30-year-old Sheffield Wednesday club record, which was set in 1996 when the Owls received between £4.5 million and £7.2 million from Real Sociedad for Darko Kovacevic.

Charles, who made 36 appearances for the Owls after moving to Hillsborough from Manchester City's academy in 2021, will spend the 2026-27 season back in the Championship with QPR after battling two shoulder injuries last year.

The young goalkeeper expressed his excitement about the move and his immediate opportunities in the second tier of English football during his introduction to his new club.

"The past few days have been quite busy, but to finally be here with a target to play this season at Champ level, it's something I've been wanting to do," said Pierce Charles, QPR Goalkeeper.

He emphasized that regular playing time is crucial for his development at this point in his career.

"It fits my stage in my career right now. There's nothing better than playing games, especially when you're young," said Pierce Charles, QPR Goalkeeper.

Sheffield Wednesday approved the sale to comply with Football League spending restrictions following their relegation to League One, despite recent optimism surrounding the club takeover by David Storch's consortium.
