He recalled the impact of seeing the community gather behind the event's banner.

“But when I looked back at the 1991 Brighton Pride banner and the crowd behind it, I thought 'wow, we did this as a community'.

I felt proud and empowered,” said Le Flohic.

Participant Abigail Dombey highlighted the vulnerability felt by early marchers, noting that a few hundred people joined the initial 1991 parade.

“It was exciting but nerve-racking, we felt vulnerable and there was verbal abuse,” said Dombey.

She stressed the importance of standing up against hostility during early demonstrations.

“However, it was important to be visible, to be seen and heard,” said Dombey.

Dombey added that activists eventually recognized the necessity of establishing an event focused on celebration alongside activism.

Meanwhile, concerns over corporate involvement remain, with critics alleging companies participate in “pink-washing” to improve public image without addressing internal equality issues.

Broadcaster and campaigner Melita Dennett emphasized that early marchers also encountered warmth and support from onlookers on the streets.

“People stopped to wave at us,” said Dennett.

She noted the heartwarming reaction from supportive crowds during early marches.

“It was really heart-warming,” said Dennett.

Dennett recalled popular chants used by activists during early demonstrations.

“I remember there were lots like 'we're here, we're queer and we're not going shopping',” said Dennett.

She concluded that early Prides solidified Brighton's status as a welcoming environment for the community.

“I think the message for younger generations is to remember the struggles that made today's freedoms possible,” said Dennett.
