Legal and Future Measures

Both cities have enacted the prohibitions through local municipal regulations specifying that electric bicycles with tires 7 centimeters or wider are banned in these areas.

The legal validity of this approach is currently being tested in court following a lawsuit filed by a fatbike importer against the Enschede ban.

The substantive hearing of this civil case is scheduled for late January.

More municipalities are considering similar fatbike bans but are awaiting the outcomes of the Enschede and Amsterdam trials or closely monitoring the ongoing court case.
