A social media idea about buying an airline quickly turned into a large-scale online campaign.

A TikTok creator’s proposal to collectively purchase Spirit Airlines attracted tens of thousands of supporters and millions in pledged funds within days, before technical issues forced the project’s website offline.

Viral idea sparks rapid online response

The campaign was started by Hunter Peterson, a voice actor who shared the concept in a TikTok video that gained millions of views.

He suggested that a portion of U.S. adults contributing a small amount — roughly the cost of a typical Spirit ticket — could pool enough money to acquire the airline.

The idea quickly gained traction, with search interest surging and the campaign site drawing heavy traffic.

Pledges climb as participation grows

According to figures displayed on the site before it went offline, more than 36,000 people registered as participants.

Total pledges reached about $22.8 million, with an average contribution reported at over $600.

Organizers stressed that the amounts were expressions of intent rather than actual payments.

Website overwhelmed by demand

The sudden spike in attention strained the campaign’s infrastructure.

Messages shared online indicated the site had exceeded its capacity and was being rebuilt, with functionality expected to return after upgrades.

Peterson acknowledged the issue directly, saying the initial version had been created quickly and needed improvements.

Plan emphasizes public ownership model

The proposal frames the airline as a community-owned venture, where participants would have equal voting rights regardless of how much they pledged.
