The Ontario Hockey League champion Kitchener Rangers opened the 2026 Memorial Cup with a dominant 5-0 shutout victory against the host Kelowna Rockets on Friday night in Kelowna, British Columbia.
Goaltender Christian Kirsch stopped all 24 shots he faced to secure the shutout for Kitchener, which had been idle since completing a sweep of the OHL final against Barrie on May 12.

The Rockets struggled to find offensive rhythm after a long layoff of their own, having not played since their Western Hockey League second-round playoff elimination by the Everett Silvertips on April 17.
Early Control and Physical Play
Kitchener established control early in the first period when forward Dylan Edwards scored off a rebound from Kelowna goaltender Harrison Boettiger.
The physical intensity escalated later in the opening frame when Kitchener defenseman Jared Woolley engaged in a fight with Dawson Gerwing with 6:24 remaining on the clock.
Woolley extended the Rangers' lead to 2-0 late in the second period, beating Boettiger with just 2:27 left before the intermission.
Kitchener heavily outshot Kelowna 31-13 through the first two periods while implementing a defensive trap that limited top Rockets forwards Tij Iginla, Carson Wetsch, and Vojtech Cihar.

Sam O'Reilly added a fourth goal on a backhand shot before Haeden Ellis deflected an Alexander Bilecki shot to complete the scoring for Kitchener.
