He acknowledged a sense of personal nostalgia regarding the decision while recognizing the inevitable industry transition toward online media platforms.
"It was pretty sad because I grew up watching Football Focus but I guess it's just the world we live in now," added Shearer.
Shearer concluded that adjusting to modern media habits remains necessary for established broadcasting institutions.
"In terms of the content and digital, there's more demand for that and there are so many going down that route, which [is] inevitable.
You have to do that... if you want to be in and around where you have to be.
So it's sad, but I guess understandable," said Shearer.
Presenters Reflect on Change
Addressing recent adjustments to the presentation staff on Match of the Day following Gary Lineker's departure, Shearer noted the transition has proceeded smoothly.
"I know the presenters have changed, but in terms of the format, not a lot has changed," observed Shearer.
He indicated that working with a rotating lineup of hosts has become the standard routine for the analysis team.
"The only thing is that we're not working with the same presenter on a regular basis.
All three of them have got on great with everyone and just sort of gone into it and seamlessly got by.
The only thing that's changed is it's not on a regular basis and seeing the same presenter, which you just have to accept," noted Shearer.
Regarding his own upcoming responsibilities, Shearer highlighted the extensive preparation required for international tournament commentary compared to playing career demands.
