The long-term future of De'Aaron Fox with the San Antonio Spurs is under scrutiny as the team's young backcourt talent continues to develop.
According to a report by Sam Amick of The Athletic on May 25, 2026, rival league executives and media members are questioning whether the star guard will remain part of the franchise's plans.

The emergence of rookie Dylan Harper, selected No. 2 overall in the 2025 draft, and the steady progression of third-year guard Stephon Castle, the No. 4 pick in 2024, have positioned the duo as the potential future backcourt foundation.
Fox forced a trade from the Sacramento Kings to San Antonio last season and is currently in his first postseason run on a four-year, $229 million contract signed in August.
The financial commitment complicates his situation. Keeping him as an expensive backup could limit flexibility around Castle, Harper, and star center Victor Wembanyama.
Amick noted that Harper is viewed as too talented to remain a permanent bench player, meaning he will eventually need to start alongside Castle.

The report indicates that the cost considerations of Fox's deal will force difficult organizational conversations about his role if it shifts to the bench.
Despite the speculation, Fox and the Spurs remain focused on winning the franchise's first NBA championship since 2014.
"We feel like we have the best team in the league," Fox said during the ongoing postseason.
