Jordan Staal, Logan Stankoven, and Andrei Svechnikov each scored for Carolina during the matchup.

Goaltender Frederik Andersen turned away 18 shots to record his third shutout of the postseason, passing Cam Ward for a franchise-record fifth playoff shutout.

Nikolaj Ehlers and Shayne Gostisbehere contributed two assists apiece for the Hurricanes.

With the victory, Carolina became the seventh team in NHL history to win six or more consecutive road playoff games to start a postseason, improving their overall playoff record to 11-1.

Montreal goaltender Jakub Dobes made 39 saves on his 25th birthday as the Canadiens dropped to a 2-6 home record during the tournament.

The loss follows consecutive 3-2 overtime defeats for Montreal after they opened the best-of-seven series with a 6-2 road win.

The physical opening frame remained scoreless until Aho converted a pass from Ehlers on a power play at 14:59.

Staal extended the lead to 2-0 at 16:07 by beating Montreal defender Josh Anderson and tapping a K'Andre Miller pass through the goaltender's pads.
