The Detroit Pistons have acquired the draft rights to center Ugonna Onyenso, who was selected 53rd overall by the Houston Rockets in the second round of the 2026 NBA Draft on June 24.

Role with the Pistons
Onyenso is expected to slot in as the third center for the Pistons, with Paul Reed moving into the backup role following the departure of Isaiah Stewart.
The 6-foot-11 Nigerian big man spent two seasons at Kentucky and one at Kansas State before completing his breakout collegiate season under head coach Ryan Odom at Virginia.
During his senior year, Onyenso averaged an ACC-best 2.9 blocks in 18.6 minutes per game, accumulating 105 blocks across 36 games.
He also posted career highs of 6.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per game, helping Virginia achieve a 30-6 record and its first NCAA Tournament victory since 2019.
Physical Attributes and Defensive Impact
At the NBA Combine in Chicago, Onyenso measured 6 feet 11 inches without shoes with a 7-foot-4.75-inch wingspan and a 9-foot-5-inch standing reach, weighing 237 pounds.
According to analytics cited by The New York Times, opponents shot just 53.9 percent at the rim when Onyenso was on the floor, highlighting his elite rim protection and drop-coverage efficiency.
Onyenso described his shot-blocking ability as natural, saying, "It's all about the timing and everything.
So I feel like, being able to block shots, if I can do that at a really, really high level, I can help teams win."
