The Detroit Red Wings are evaluating whether 24-year-old goaltender Michal Postava is ready to serve as the NHL backup to John Gibson for the 2026-27 season.

This decision follows multiple reports indicating General Manager Steve Yzerman is actively exploring trade options for fellow goaltending prospect Sebastian Cossa.

According to reports from Yahoo Sports, MLive, and Detroit Hockey Now, Postava excelled during his debut North American season with the AHL affiliate Grand Rapids Griffins.

The undrafted Czech netminder posted a 17-6-0 regular-season record with a 1.71 goals-against average and a .

937 save percentage before securing the starting role in the Calder Cup playoffs.

If the Red Wings promote Postava to Detroit, top prospect Trey Augustine can remain in the AHL to receive substantial playing time.

Alternatively, Yzerman could sign an experienced veteran backup such as Eric Comrie, Connor Ingram, Matt Murray, David Rittich, Daniil Tarasov, or Vitek Vanecek, allowing Postava further development time while the club moves on from veteran Cam Talbot.

Postava's Mindset and Transition

Postava expressed clear intentions regarding his future and his ultimate objectives within the professional ranks.

"It's my main goal, which is why I left for America," said Postava.

The young netminder acknowledged the adjustments required during his transition from European hockey, having previously led Kometa Brno to a Czech Extraliga championship.

"Since it was my first season abroad, it was a bit more challenging," said Postava.
