A 1998 Daihatsu Hijet DeckVan currently listed for sale in the US blurs the line between van and pickup.

This JDM kei-class vehicle seats four people up front but transforms into a tiny truck bed at the rear.

From the front, it looks like a standard eighth-generation Hijet van. The side windows and four seats give it the appearance of a typical minivan.

However, the body abruptly ends behind the rear seats, revealing a small pickup bed.

The bed measures just 2 feet 10 inches (860 mm or 34 inches) long.

That is comparable to later DeckVan models, making it one of the smallest pickup beds available.

Traditional kei trucks usually seat only two, but the DeckVan adds a second row with generous legroom.

The rear bench folds down, though there is no pass-through flap for longer items.

Under the front seats sits a 660cc three-cylinder engine, the maximum allowed for kei class.

It produces around 44 hp and sends power to all four wheels through a five-speed manual transmission.

Condition and Price

This example shows approximately 69,000 miles (111,000 km) and is in tidy condition for a nearly 30-year-old commercial vehicle.

The seller, Japan Direct Motors, reports no significant rust, dents, or dings, and the paint looks solid.

The interior shows minimal wear, though aftermarket seat covers have a small tear.

Priced at $12,950, it is not the cheapest kei import, but it offers a unique combination: seating for four, a tiny bed for light hauling, and the ability to navigate tight spaces.
