McIlroy expressed his intentions regarding his reduced playing schedule earlier this month after noting his changing routine at the Memorial Tournament.
"I've been doing this a long time, I've been on Tour longer – more than half of my life at this point.
So I'll pick and choose my spots like I have been doing sort of the last 18 months to two years," McIlroy said.
Prior to practicing at Royal Birkdale for the upcoming major tournament, McIlroy detailed his affinity for returning to European courses during this stretch of the season, as reported by ESPN.
"I'll be playing some links golf this week probably coming up.
It's my favorite time of the year to go back home and play, play the Open, and I get to spend a bit of time back there," McIlroy said.
