Mercedes driver George Russell secured the pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix following a dramatic qualifying session that ended with a heavy crash by championship leader Max Verstappen.
Russell posted a time of 1:06.113 on his final flying lap, beating Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton by more than two-tenths of a second.

The session was cut short when Verstappen lost control of his car at turn nine and slammed into the barriers, prompting immediate single yellow flags.
The caution flags forced several drivers, including Russell's teammate Kimi Antonelli, McLaren's Lando Norris, and Oscar Piastri, to lift off during their final runs.
Antonelli will start the race from fourth place, with Verstappen in fifth, followed by Norris and Piastri in sixth and seventh positions respectively.
Stewards Clear Russell After Review
Stewards reviewed the incident for potential yellow flag infringements but determined no further investigation was necessary, as Russell had sufficiently backed off.
"I feel incredible, it was such an amazing lap," said Russell.

The British driver explained that he noticed the caution signal and adjusted his speed accordingly through the section while maintaining his existing time advantage.
"I saw the yellow and did a big lift into the corner.
I was five-tenths up and came out of the corner two and a half tenths up," Russell added.
Prior to the final incident, Norris had set an initial baseline of 1:06.0900 before Verstappen posted a 1:06.475, which was subsequently beaten by Antonelli and Russell.
