Meanwhile, the Phillies have been reshuffling their own pitching staff to establish a reliable fifth starter following Andrew Painter's demotion.
Interim manager Don Mattingly addressed the team's commitment to finding flexibility within that rotation spot.
"At this point, we've kind of made a commitment to that spot," Mattingly said. "I'm not saying we're making a commitment to a full start every time.
It could be an opener, it could be starting."
The Phillies recently recalled right-hander Alan Rangel and kept Seth Johnson on the major league roster to solidify their pitching depth ahead of the July trade deadline.
