Texas A&M Director of Athletics Trev Alberts announced on June 28, 2026, the hiring of Olympic gold medalist Leroy Burrell as the 20th head coach of the Texas A&M track and field program.
Burrell, a former University of Houston sprinter, replaces the retiring legendary head coach Pat Henry after serving four seasons at Auburn University.

During his tenure at Auburn, Burrell secured four top-five NCAA Championship finishes, including an outdoor national runner-up finish in 2024 and two top-four finishes across the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
"We are excited to welcome Leroy and his family to Aggieland," Alberts said.
Alberts noted Burrell's championship-level success, development of elite athletes, and his experience as an Olympic gold medalist and national champion.
"Coach Leroy Burrell is exactly the kind of complete leader this program needs at this pivotal moment," Assistant Athletics Director and Sport Administrator Jonathan Wallace said.

Wallace added that Burrell's athletic and coaching background, paired with his alignment with Texas A&M core values, stood out during the search process as he returns to the state of Texas.
Prior to his stint at Auburn, Burrell spent 23 seasons coaching his alma mater, Houston, where he secured 44 conference titles, engineered seven top-10 NCAA results, and earned three USTFCCCA South Central Region Coach of the Year honors.
Over his entire coaching career, Burrell has guided 19 national champions, 266 All-Americans, 376 conference champions, and 19 Olympians.

His student-athletes broke the 4x100m collegiate record and the 110m hurdles world record in 2026.
