According to a report by BBC Sounds on June 29, 2026, the appointment was finalized after Manchester City and Chelsea agreed on a compensation package.
Compensation Deal Resolved
Extensive discussions between the two clubs were required to settle the financial terms for Maresca, who had previously managed Leicester City before a brief stint at Chelsea.
Maresca left his role at Chelsea in January after recording just one win in seven Premier League matches.
Chelsea initially described the separation as a mutual decision aimed at improving the team's competitive direction.

Maresca later clarified that he voluntarily chose to leave the London club, stating that his departure "opened a path."
Chelsea confirmed that a financial settlement had been legally finalized, noting Maresca's "decision not to continue fulfilling his responsibilities."
