Ford Motor Company is recalling 741,195 vehicles in the United States after discovering a transmission defect that could cause unintended rollaways, increasing crash risk.

Affected Models and Issue

The recall covers certain 2018–2021 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator models, 2020–2021 Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator models, and 2021 F-150 pickups equipped with park-by-wire and 10R80 transmissions.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the transmission parking pawl may temporarily engage while the vehicle is moving, potentially damaging the park system.

If the parking brake is not applied, the vehicle may not hold in park.

Drivers will see a wrench warning light on the dashboard, and the electronic parking brake will automatically engage if the vehicle fails to enter park mode when commanded.

Injuries and Damages Reported

Ford is aware of 24 reports of property damage and nine alleged injuries, including two emotional injuries, linked to the malfunction.

The company estimates that about 1% of recalled vehicles have the defect.

Authorized dealers will update the Powertrain Control Module software and replace damaged components at no cost.

Interim notification letters will be sent by August 3, with full remedy letters expected by April 2027.

Additional Recalls for Broncos and F-150s

Separately, Ford is recalling 36,046 Bronco vehicles from model years 2022 to 2026 because improperly secured fender flares may fall off, posing a hazard to other drivers.

Ford is also recalling 44,963 model year 2014 F-150 pickup trucks that were previously repaired incorrectly.

A loss of signal between the transmission output shaft speed sensor and the powertrain control module can cause these trucks to unexpectedly downshift into first gear, increasing crash risk.

The company identified contamination, power short to ground, connector corrosion, connector pin swaging, and incorrect sensor outputs as possible causes.
