Following her death at age 96 on September 8, 2022, Prince William had issued a formal statement balancing her global duties with her personal role.
"On Thursday, the world lost an extraordinary leader... I, however, have lost a grandmother," he said then.
He noted that the Queen remained by his side through both happy and sad moments. "She was by my side at my happiest moments.
And she was by my side during the saddest days of my life," he said.

The statement closed by invoking one of the late monarch's famous sentiments: "My grandmother famously said that grief was the price we pay for love."
