A Tesla Semi rear-ended two passenger vehicles stopped at a red light in Dayton, Nevada, on Sunday, resulting in two fatalities and one person with life-threatening injuries.

This marks the first known fatal crash involving the fully electric truck.

According to the Lyon County Sheriff's Office, the driver may have fallen asleep, though the official cause has not been confirmed.

The incident occurred on US 50 when a classic VW Beetle and a red Toyota RAV4 had stopped at the red light.

Victims and Aftermath

The married couple in one of the vehicles were pronounced dead at the scene. A third person was airlifted to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Both directions of US 50 were closed for several hours for debris cleanup.

Photos from the scene show the heavily damaged Beetle beside the white Tesla Semi, which sustained a broken front bumper.

The RAV4 suffered a crumpled rear end.

The Nevada State Police are investigating the crash.

The Tesla Semi does not have Full Self-Driving capability but includes autonomous emergency braking, which is designed to prevent such collisions.

The truck was manufactured at Gigafactory Nevada, about an hour from the crash site. The driver's identity and the truck's operator have not been released.

The updated Tesla Semi was introduced in late 2025 for 2026 production.
