BMW has confirmed that the next-generation X5 will include a non-electrified V8 engine in the M60 variant, set to arrive next year.
The new X5 M60 will be powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 without any electrical assistance, continuing the legacy of the outgoing X5 M60i.

In the previous model, the V8 produced 523 hp.
Reports suggest the new version could see a power bump, possibly reaching around 603 hp, matching the output of the X5 M60e plug-in hybrid.
Two Paths to Similar Power
The M60e achieves its 603 hp and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) via a 3.0-liter turbo inline-six paired with an electric motor and a 26.5 kWh battery pack.

In contrast, the M60 uses two extra cylinders and an additional turbocharger, forgoing electrification entirely. While less fuel efficient, it promises a more engaging sound.
The V8-powered X5 M60 will not be the range flagship. A full X5 M model is expected, likely offered in both V8 plug-in hybrid and all-electric configurations.

The new X5 M could adopt a hybrid setup similar to the current M5's 727 hp system, giving BMW room to increase M60 power without overlapping with the M5.
