The Paramount film, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, is scheduled to premiere on January 15, 2027.

It features an ensemble cast including Amandla Stenberg, Thuso Mbedu, and Viola Davis.

Adeyemi shared her decision on TikTok, revealing she would not promote the movie.

"There is a reason I will not post anything about the adaptation of my work," she said.

The writer also shared texts sent in February 2025 to actress Amandla Stenberg, who faced colorism criticisms regarding her casting as Princess Amari.

"Do not ever use my name in an interview or video again. Do not text me.

Do not call me," Adeyemi wrote.

Adeyemi, who co-wrote the film script with Prince-Bythewood, noted that concealing her feelings has been difficult.

"I have not seen the film, and I will not watch it," she said.

The author expressed regret toward her followers while emphasizing her dedication to her core community.

"It's been painful holding this back from you all … And I'm sorry if any of you thought I didn't care about US.

More than any glitter," Adeyemi said.

Reflecting on her original motivations during the book release in 2018, Adeyemi highlighted her intent to represent Black teenage girls in literature.

"I had a lot of different reasons for writing the book but at its core was the desire to write for black teenage girls growing up reading books they were absent from," she said.
