"It is obviously my decision, but you're kind of forced into it. I would love to stay here and love to be a part of this group.

But for me, you have to give yourself an opportunity as a player to contribute," Gallagher said.

He finalized his thoughts by affirming his lifelong connection to the city where he spent his entire professional career since being drafted in 2010.

"Montreal is always going to be home, and I don't want it to be lost on anyone how fortunate I feel to have the opportunity to play here for as long as I have," Gallagher said.

Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes released a formal statement thanking Gallagher for his exceptional tenure and enduring standard of leadership on and off the ice.

"Brendan will always hold a special place in the hearts of Canadiens fans. He represented the team with such tremendous determination, passion and inspiring courage.

He is the very definition of a warrior," Hughes said.
