A historic triple-digit heat wave and severe thunderstorms disrupted Fourth of July weekend celebrations across Maryland on Saturday, July 4, 2026, causing widespread power outages, infrastructure damage, and schedule changes.

Temperatures in Baltimore peaked at a record-breaking 102 degrees Fahrenheit at BWI Marshall Airport, surpassing the previous holiday record of 100 degrees set in 1898.

High humidity drove the afternoon heat index between 110 and 115 degrees, triggering an Extreme Heat Warning from the National Weather Service.

The intense heat gave way to severe evening thunderstorms with wind gusts reaching up to 70 mph, knocking out electricity to approximately 80,000 customers by late Saturday night.

Falling trees and downed power lines forced authorities to close Interstate 97 in both directions near the airport and prompted the Maryland Transit Administration to halt Light Rail service south of Patapsco.

Prior to the storm damage, high utility demand during the extreme temperatures caused localized electrical failures.

Power grid strains on Friday left thousands of residents temporarily without electricity as businesses and municipal operations faced disruptions.

Stephanie Weaver, a spokesperson for BGE, attributed the failures to underground cable faults from exceedingly high usage during extreme heat.

The utility company increased staffing and maintained around-the-clock operations to address the underground system faults.

Meanwhile, area medical centers reported a tangible impact from the prolonged heat wave on public health infrastructure.

Justin McLeod, a spokesperson for the Luminis Health Medical Centers in Lanham and Annapolis, noted a noticeable increase in heat-related illnesses, particularly heat exhaustion.

The medical surge began on Thursday when temperatures initially climbed to 101 degrees.

In response to the dangerous conditions, municipal leaders scaled back public gatherings, shortened or postponed community parades, and deployed transit buses to serve as mobile cooling stations.
