British wildcard Arthur Fery advanced to the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time after a grueling five-set victory at Wimbledon.

The match lasted four hours and 38 minutes, the longest of the tournament so far.

Fery, born in France to former professional tennis player Olivier Féry and FC Lorient president Loïc Féry, grew up near the All England Club.

He credited his fighting spirit for the comeback on Court 18, where local spectators gathered to support the last remaining British player.

"I was just trying to back my fighting spirit," Fery said in his news conference.

Fery will face Grigor Dimitrov in the men's singles round of 16.

In other action, American Ashlyn Krueger also reached the round of 16 after defeating Ukraine's Daria Snigur 6-3, 6-2.

The 22-year-old Texan entered the main draw through qualifying after her ranking dropped outside the top 100.

Krueger credited consecutive strong performances in June, including a semifinal at the Birmingham Open and a title at the WTA 125 event in Ilkley.

"It's very difficult to work on that," said Krueger, who is coached by her mother.
