The San Francisco Giants are reportedly looking to sell players before the August 3, 2026, trade deadline, making veteran third baseman Matt Chapman available despite his recent placement on the injured list.
According to ESPN analysts Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan, Chapman has a 25 percent chance of being dealt, representing higher trade odds than teammates Rafael Devers and Willy Adames due to his elite defensive capabilities.

The Giants are willing to navigate Chapman's remaining contract, which owes him over $100 million through 2030, because of the rapid emergence of 27-year-old infielder Casey Schmitt as a viable replacement at third base.
The defensive disparity among San Francisco's high-priced veterans plays a major role in trade discussions.
"Nobody is taking Rafael Devers unless San Francisco pays down significantly the $211 million he is owed after this season or takes on bad contracts," Passan and McDaniel wrote.
The ESPN reporters further explained that defensive declines have impacted other players on the roster while Chapman's glove preserves his market viability.
"The same goes for Willy Adames, whose defense has gone in the wrong direction. Chapman's glove salvages his value and puts him at least in play."
Giants broadcaster Dave Flemming praised Schmitt's recent defensive performance against the Colorado Rockies, where he turned a high-difficulty double play while filling in for Chapman.
"THAT'S ONE OF THE GREATEST PLAYS I'VE EVER SEEN," Flemming said.
