BMW is recalling 29,919 plug-in hybrid vehicles in the United States due to a fire risk, urging owners to park them outside and away from structures until repairs are made.

The recall affects certain 2016-2018 330e iPerformance, 2017-2019 740Le xDrive iPerformance, and 2018-2020 530e iPerformance models, including their all-wheel drive variants.

Corrosion Can Cause Short Circuit

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, water can contact the engine starter relay, leading to corrosion.

This may cause the relay to overheat and short circuit.

In extreme cases, a thermal event could occur while driving or when the vehicle is parked with the ignition off.

The issue is linked to a previous 2025 recall covering 196,355 vehicles, though that campaign did not include plug-in hybrids.

BMW continued investigating after the initial recall, examining around 150 starters from the field and noting several incidents.

The findings prompted a voluntary safety recall.

Dealers will replace the starter with an improved design.
