Slate Auto has confirmed it has no plans to sell its budget-friendly electric truck in Canada, leaving Canadian buyers without access to one of the most affordable EVs in the U.
S.

The startup, backed by Jeff Bezos, launched its piccolo pickup in 2025 with a starting price of $24,950.
Its Squareback and Fastback SUV conversions start at $29,950 and $31,950 respectively. Deliveries are set to begin in late 2026.
Slate's minimalist design includes hand-crank windows, no power seats, and no keyless entry.
The truck offers 205 miles (330 km) of range and allows buyers to add accessories later.
Slate spokesperson Jeff Jablansky told Automotive News Canada, “We do not have plans to sell vehicles in Canada.”

The decision is likely driven by Canada's 25% retaliatory tariffs on American-built vehicles, which would push the truck's price beyond its bargain appeal.
The company reportedly holds around 180,000 reservations, but converting those into sales remains a challenge.
Ford Offers an Alternative
Canadian shoppers seeking an inexpensive electric pickup can turn to Ford. The automaker is teasing a compact electric truck expected to start below $30,000 in the U.
S. and will be sold in Canada starting in 2027.

Pricing north of the border is yet to be announced.
