Mike DeWine has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff across Wayne County and at state government buildings in Columbus following a deadly shooting in Rittman.

The incident occurred on Sunday night, July 5, 2026, leaving a police sergeant and two citizens dead.
Authorities responded to a residence on Chippewa Trail around 9:30 p. m.
after reports of a break-in and gunfire, according to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.
Officers faced immediate gunfire upon arrival.
Rittman Police Sgt. Scott Ries, 54, was killed.
He was a 10-year veteran of the department and had previously served with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office and the Sugar Grove Police Department.
Two residents, 43-year-old Christine McWilliams and her 13-year-old daughter, McKinley McWilliams, were also killed.
The Wayne County Coroner's Office identified the deceased suspect as 38-year-old Brandon Fazekas. His gunshot wound was consistent with suicide.
Information obtained by FOX 8 indicated that Fazekas was either the boyfriend or ex-boyfriend of the victim.

Four Medina County sheriff's deputies sustained injuries during the encounter and received medical treatment.
A Wayne County sheriff's K-9 officer named Vick remains in serious condition after being shot.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is leading the ongoing probe.
City officials released a statement honoring Sgt. Ries.
"Sgt. Ries served the Rittman Police Department with honor and courage," city officials said.
"Throughout his service, Sgt. Ries demonstrated an enduring commitment to protecting others and upholding the law."
The flag order will remain in effect until sunset on the day of the funeral, according to state officials.
Attorney General Andy Wilson also issued a statement praising the fallen officer.
"A career peace officer, Sgt. Ries dedicated his life to serving and protecting others.

He made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting his community," Wilson said.
