Ford and Canada's Unifor union have reached a tentative three-year agreement, just after the initial deadline passed.

The deal covers 5,150 union members employed at Oakville Assembly, the Essex Engine Plant, the Windsor Annex, and several parts distribution centers.

Negotiations began on June 22, with a target of July 10. After lengthy discussions that stretched into the weekend, a tentative deal was finally struck.

Unifor noted the contract received unanimous endorsement from its Ford Master Bargaining Committee. Details will be presented to members at ratification meetings starting July 17.

Unifor's John D'Agnolo said, “Our members put in the work on the shop floor every day, and our entire negotiating team made sure that work was recognized at the bargaining table.”

Unifor National President Lana Payne added, “Securing this tentative agreement comes at a vital time for Canada’s auto workers and our domestic industry.

Every member of our bargaining committee came to the table resolved to reach a fair deal that protects good union jobs in the most challenging of economic times.”

The union entered talks focused on job and income security, stable ground for Canada's auto industry, pension and retirement security, and health benefits.

The negotiations come amid uncertainty over the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which the Trump administration has decided not to renew in its current form.

If members approve the Ford contract, attention will turn to General Motors and Stellantis.
